Their Argentine opponents Estudiantes de La Plata had surprisingly gone ahead in the 37th minute through Mauro Boselli’s header.
Lionel Messi scored an extra-time winner in the 110th minute from a Dani Alves cross to give the European champions’ their sixth trophy of 2009 in front of 43,050 fans at the Zayed Sports City stadium.
