The Asian World Cup qualification process began in 2011 with 43 national teams; only 10 teams remain in contention. Split into to two groups of five, each Asian team is vying for four guaranteed spots in the 2014 World Cup. The fifth-placed team will face the fifth-placed team from CONMEBOL’s World Cup qualifying tournaments for the last World Cup spot in November, the final stage of the qualification rounds. Tuesday’s competition promises to be intense: Korea Republic and Qatar are tied for second place with seven points each in Group A, while Australia and Oman are also tied for second place with five points in Group B.
