Substitute Alex Morgan scored a stoppage time winner to give the United States National Women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Italy in the first leg of their 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying series in Padova, Italy on Saturday.
The USA had much of the possession during the match but was thwarted time and time again by a resolute Azzurre defence that made four goal line clearances during the meeting.
The teams will meet again on November 27th in Chicago, Ill. for the second leg of the home and away series with the winner on aggregate goals advancing to next year’s World Cup finals in Germany.
