Barcelona engaged in an onslaught on the Arsenal goal throughout the first half but were denied by the heroics of Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.
Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally opened the scoring for La Blaugrana in the 46th and followed with a second in the 59th before being substituted for Arsenal icon Thierry Henry in the 77th.
England winger Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a lifeline with a 69th minute effort after coming off the bench in the 66th.
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas tied the match from the penalty spot in the 85th after he was pulled down by Carlos Puyol in front of goal. Puyol was red carded for his foul and will miss next week’s return leg at the Camp Nou along with Gerard Piqué and Fabregas who are both suspended due to accumulated yellow cards.
