An impressive Egyptian side pulled off the shock of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup thus far by defeating World Cup champions Italy 1-0 today. Midfielder Hommos scored the Pharaohs’ lone goal in the 40th minute with a header from a corner that left Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon flatfooted.
Egypt was able to survive an Azzuri siege on their goal for the rest of their match and are now still in the running for a semi-final spot in the tournament. They meet the USA in their final group match on Sunday.
