We’re wrapping up our series at several of Umbro’s major kit releases of 2016/17 with an up-close look at the latest Derby County FC home jersey. Given The Rams standing as the English Football League Championship’s in-form team of the moment (winning seven of their last eight and remaining undefeated since mid-October) the shirt has become in-demand by DCFC fans and shirt collectors alike.

The Derby County Basics
Derby County Football Club’s runs in the Premier League in the late 1990s and 2000s along with their recent skirmishes with promotion from the Championship have familiarized soccer fans with their mainly white home kits. This year’s home offering from outfitters since 2014 (and previously in the 70s, 80s and 90s) Umbro is no exception to The Rams traditional look. The jersey also includes a fair amount of the black that provided the detailing of Derby’s primary kits since 1989.
The stylized ram that became the club’s shirt crest in 1971 stamped on the left breast in a raised rubber composite while the geographical co-ordinates of Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium is printed on the inside neckline in black beneath a graphic based on the on the architecture of the ground’s roofing structure.
Design and Details
Given their stature as one of the bigger clubs in the EFL Championship, Derby County’s 2016/17 home kit uses a bespoke design from Umbro. It is based on a classic football shirt design with a modern polo collar and four-buttoned placket. The collar is on the smaller side and has classy rounded edges. Made of white and black layers, the buttons on the jersey are rubberized and are all hidden when fastened except to the top button.
The standout feature of the 16/17 Rams shirt are ventilated blocks of black that run along the shoulders, underarms and down the flanks of the kit. The amount of black provided by these blocks if the most on a Derby County shirt in some time. The detailing has nonetheless been well-received by the club’s fans.
Fit and Feel
Derby County’s 2016/17 Umbro home kit fits true to size and is very much like today’s polo shirts. It is not slim-fitting like many current football shirt and leaves ample room for movement. The jersey is made of a modern lightweight polyester that works well to dissipate sweat and keeps you cool in warmer weather. As such it is extremely comfortable and a great piece of attire for showing off your love for DCFC or The Beautiful Game if the temperature allows.
