ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS will combine to televise all matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, June 15-30, from six cities in Brazil, host nation for next summer’s 2014 FIFA World Cup.
All 16 matches will be available live and for replay on WatchESPN. Also, ESPN3, the company’s live multi-screen sports network available in 83 million homes, will show several matches.
Live match coverage will begin on Saturday, June 15, on ESPN and WatchESPN with the tournament’s opening match – host country Brazil vs. Japan – at 2:30 p.m. ET from Estádio Nacional in Brasilia.
ESPN and ESPN Mobile TV will air 13 matches, including three group stage contests featuring the Mexican Men’s National Team – vs. Italy (June 16 at 2:30 p.m. ET), vs. Brazil (June 19 at 2:30 p.m.), and vs. Japan (June 22 at 2:30 p.m.). ESPN2 will televise two matches including the third-place match on June 30 at 11:45 a.m., and ESPNEWS will show one match on Sat., June 22 at 2:30 p.m. – the second of two simultaneous matches in Group B between legendary soccer teams Italy and Brazil.
The Event:
The Confederations Cup is a competitive international tournament featuring champions of the six FIFA Confederations – CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football), UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), CAF (African Football Confederation), CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation), AFC (Asian Football Confederation) and OFC (Oceana Football Confederation) – and the upcoming host and past winner of the FIFA World Cup.
Originally organized by and held in Saudi Arabia, and known as the King Fahd Cup, the tournament was founded in 1992. FIFA took control of the event in 1997, renaming it the FIFA Confederations Cup and hosting the tournament every two years. It is now contested every four years (since 2005) and it is held one-year prior to the FIFA World Cup.
The Confederation Cup matches will be played in six cities in Brazil – Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.
