South Korea humbled the United States 3-0 on Friday night to advance to the round of 16 in the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
The result leaves the United States (1-2) third in Group C with three points, ahead of Cameroon (1-2) on goal difference. As a result, they hold on to a slim chance of advancement pending the results of today’s other and Saturday’s final first round games.
Kim Young-gwon opened the scoring for South Korea in the 23rd minute. Kim Bo-kyung added a second in the 42nd before Koo Ja-cheol converted a penalty kick in the 75th after Ike Opara’s questionable ejection for a foul in the box. Five other U.S. players received yellow cards in the match.
