Real Madrid pummeled relegated Almeria by a score of 8-1 at the Santiago Bernadeu on Saturday in the final round of the 2010/11 Spanish La Liga season.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to set the new record for La Liga goals in a single season with 40. Ronaldo had shared the previous record of 38 with Athletic Bilbao’s Telmo Zarra (1950-51) and Madrid’s Hugo Sanchez (1989-90).

Real Madrid finishes the season in second spot in the table, four points behind repeat champions FC Barcelona.
