Regional rivals Japan and South Korea battled to a 2-2 draw that had to be settled via penalty kicks in their AFC Asian Cup 2011 semi-final meeting on Tuesday. Japan triumphed 3-0 in the shootout following 120 minutes of soccer and will now face the winner of the Australia vs. Uzbekistan semi final for the tournament title on January 29th.

Ki Sung-yueng put the Koreans up 1-0 with a disputed penalty kick in the 23rd before Ryoichi Maeda equalized for the Blue Samurai in the 36th. Hajime Hosogai slotted in Keisuke Honda’s missed penalty in the 97th minute to apparently give Japan a spot in the final. However, Hwang Jae-won scored a last gasp 120th minute goal for Korea to force a penalty shootout.
