Santos FC have launched a special edition Anti-Racism version of their 2013/14 Nike home jersey following racist abuse of club midfielder Arouca by fans of Mogi Mirim during a Campeonato Paulista match earlier this month.
The new Santos shirt features the text “Sou Alvinegro com muito orgulho” (“I’m very proud to be Black and White”) in a play on the team’s nickname of “Alvinegro”. The kit was worn in match action during Sunday’s 3-3 Paulista draw with Rio Claro.
Italian giants wore an Anti-Racism version of the 2012/13 home kit before a home match in January 2013 after several of the club’s black players were abused at third division Pro Patria. Brazilian club Vasco da Gama’s 2011 third kit had an Anti-Racism inspiration based on the club’s support of non-discrimination dating back to the 1920s.
