adidas takes inspiration from one of the legendary jerseys of German football history for the new shirt – the team’s 1988 to 1990 away shirt worn by the likes of Rudi Völler, Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann during the team’s run to Germany’s 1990 World Cup title.
The most significant feature of the kit is its chest graphic reminiscent of the one used on the 88/90 alternate jersey. It is also has elements of street and skateboard culture incorporated into it.
The Germany 2017/18 adidas home jersey also features a black, red and gold ribbed v-neck collar and a golden FIFA World Cup champions badge. adidas’ famous three stripes appear on the shoulders of the shirt while “Die Mannschaft” is printed on its upper back. The shirt is matched with is completed with black shorts and white socks.
2014 World Cup winner Mats Hummels commented: “I’m a fan of our more classic jerseys – the new version is even cooler and more dynamic, I like it a lot.”
adidas and the DFB offically presented the Germany 16/17 home kit today in Düsseldorf earlier today as part of a “Urban Football Gallery”. National team and Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan was the main model at the event.
The exhibition included portrait photos of the international players Mesut Özil, Mats Hummels, Gündogan and young footballers donning the new kit in urban football settings.
The Germany men’s senior national team will debut their 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup kit when they meet San Marion on Friday, November 11th in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualification. They will continue to wear the shirt during World Cup qualifiers and friendlies over the next year.
