Bundesliga table toppers FC Bayern München will don a special edition adidas kit made of ocean plastic when they host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
Released along with a similar kit for fellow adidas club Real Madrid, the jersey was created to bring awareness to the problem of ocean pollution, swirls and damage to marine life caused by plastic dumped in the sea.
The yarns of the fabric used for the Bayern Munich adidas x Parley 2016/17 jersey are made of up-cycled marine plastic waste recovered via Parley for the Oceans interception and clean-up operations in coastal areas of the Maldives.
The relatively simple v-neck kit is in Bayern Munich’s primary red with a tonal red club crest. It sponsor logos are also tonal and approved to have lower visibility than usual by shirt sponsor Deutsche Telekom and the Bundesliga.
Bayern and Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso unveiled the club’s new Parley kit at a press conference on Friday. He is also the main model for adidas’ launch of the jersey.
