Reissue: Denmark 1988 hummel Home Kit

After a 37-year hiatus, the iconic Denmark national football team home jersey from 1988 is making a remarkable comeback. In a collaborative effort, hummel and the Danish Football Federation (DBU) have reissued the legendary kit once worn by Danish football luminaries Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, and Preben Elkjær during the European Championship.

The revival comes in response to persistent requests from Danish supporters eager to own a piece of their nation’s football heritage. While the 1988 European Championship campaign wasn’t Denmark’s most successful sporting endeavor, the jersey represents a pivotal era that established Danish football’s international reputation. The distinctive red jersey features hummel’s characteristic chevron design along the shoulders and sleeves, maintaining the authentic aesthetic that made it a beloved classic.

Originally debuting for the 1988 European Championship in Germany, the Denmark home jersey was worn during a challenging tournament for Sepp Piontek’s squad. Denmark found themselves in what became known as the “group of death” alongside formidable opponents Spain, Italy, and tournament hosts West Germany. The Danish side exited after the group stage without securing any points, concluding with a difficult 2-7 goal difference.

This same jersey design continued to serve the team during qualification matches for the 1990 World Cup. During this campaign, Denmark achieved victories against Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania, though they ultimately fell short of qualifying for the tournament. Despite these mixed results, the jersey became emblematic of an important transitional period in Danish football history.

“After a huge demand from Danish fans, we are delighted to finally bring back the iconic national team jersey from Euro ’88. While this particular jersey wasn’t part of Denmark’s greatest footballing triumphs, it remains a symbol of an era that helped put Danish football on the world map. That’s why we believe fans deserve a chance to relive those memories and wear a piece of the national team’s proud history,” commented hummel’s Marketing Director, Morten Lund.

“Euro 1988 was a disappointment in terms of results, but it also marked the beginning of a new era for Danish football. Together with hummel, we are proud to bring the jersey back—not just as a tribute to the players who wore it back then, but as a reminder of a period that paved the way for the future of Danish football. We hope fans will embrace it and join us in the revival of a very important chapter in the national team’s great history,” added DBU’s Commercial Director, Birgitte Mabeck.
