PUMA released the throwback-feel Italy EURO 2016 home kit late last year. It saw action during the Azzurri’s last two friendlies of 2015 ( meetings with Belgium and Romania). Here is our World Exclusive unboxing and up-close look at the latest home jersey of the four-time World Cup winners. It is now on sale World Soccer Shop, Subside Sports, UK Soccer Shop, Lovell Soccer and Kitbag along with the full PUMA Italy 2016 match and training range.
Note: Our pictures are of the fancentric replica version of the Italy EURO 2016 home shirt. The player issue version is a form-fitting kit that includes PUMA’s ACTV Thermo-R taping on the inside of the front and back areas to support player muscles and regulate body heat generated during match play.
The Italy PUMA 2016/17 home kit that we looked at came wrapped in brown paper and tied with brown twine for a retro feel. A couple of Italian stamps were included on the brown paper. Upon opening the package up we were created with a kit presentation box featuring the a map of the USA in Italian colors.
The text “ITALIA. IL VIAGGIO. UNITED STATES” was printed on its front. The inside of the box has one of the launch images used when PUMA dropped the Azzurri jersey along with “IL VIAGGIO” (TRAVEL). All of this alone makes the case worth collecting. PUMA knows how to do both soccer boot and kit presentation packages. They did brilliantly again this time.
The Italy EURO 2016 home jersey uses a bespoke design that we haven’t seen shared with any other PUMA club or national team. The look of the fabric is a football shirt lover’s delight thanks to the timelessness of the embossed vertical pinstripes its front and back. Its ribbed crewneck collar and wide sleeve cuffs compliment the pinstripes well to create a classic kit vibe reminiscent of jerseys worn during the 1960s and 1970s. The kit does remind us of the shirt worn by the Azzurri team that fell to Pele and Brazil in the final of the 1970 World Cup.
A nice touch used in the Italy 2014 World Cup home kit that is back for the team’s EURO 2016 primary jersey is a printed old school tag featuring “TRADIZIONE. FORZA. AZZURRI.” (Tradition. Power. Blue.) on the inside neck area. This tag appeared on the inside lower back of the World Cup shirt. We prefer its placement this time out given its classiness.
The Italian national colors are represented on the Azzurri’s 16/17 shirt via the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) crest and inserts separating the front and back tails. The latter is not something that we’ll see often when the Italy team is in match action because of regulations requiring players to tuck their shirts into their shorts.
Though overwhelmingly vintage in nature, the Italian EURO 2016 home jersey does include several modern features. The most prominent of them is a ventilated shoulder striped made of breathable mesh and bordered in golden piping on the front and back of the kit. The underarm and upper flanks of the kit also use the ventilated fabric to aid in cooling.
Lastly, the fit of the Italy EURO 2016 PUMA home jersey is true to size. It is on the modern slim-fitting side even and complements athletic builds very well. Among our favorite EURO 2016 shirts, it will work well with anything from cargo shorts to jeans to track pants.
