Premier League Launches New Logo for 2016/17 Season. Drops Sponsorship.

The English Premier League today announced a new visual identity that will be used from the 2016/17 season and into the foreseeable future.

The extremely popular and well-marketed football league worked with Design Studio and Robin Brand Consultants to create “a bold and vibrant identity that includes a modern take on the lion icon – a symbol that is part of the competition’s heritage”.

The Premier League says that the new branding readily supports both television and online broadcast formats as well as digital presences including social media.

The image of a lion with a paw on a soccer ball will be replaced by a crowned lion’s head and the text “Premier League” or “PL”. The league will also move away from having a title sponsor and be known simply as the Premier League.

“From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known simply as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted to present ourselves as an organisation and competition,” Premier League Managing Director, Richard Masters, said.

“We are very pleased with the outcome: a visual identity which is relevant, modern and flexible that will help us celebrate everyone that makes the Premier League.

“We look forward to sharing more details of our new positioning in the coming months.”
