USA international Freddy Adu was officially presented as a Philadelphia Union player on Friday. Adu joins former manager Peter Nowak’s team on a free transfer from Portugal’s Benfica.

Regarded as a star in the making when he was drafted by DC United at age 14 in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, Adu previously played for three years in the US before moving to Europe. His period overseas was largely disappointing as the now 22-year old made only eleven appearances for Benfica. He spent most of his time as a Benfica player on loan as AS Monaco, Belenenses, Aris and Çaykur Rizespor.

Adu resurrected his international career with several strong showings for the USA at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup after a two-year absence from the national team.
