Uruguay defeated 10-man Peru 2-0 on Tuesday night in the semi-finals of Copa America 2011. The result sees Uruguay advance to their first Copa America final since winning the tournament in 1995. A win in Sunday’s final against the winner of tomorrow night’s meeting between Paraguay and Chile will give Uruguay a record 15th South American championship.
After a tense goalless first half, Liverpool striker Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay in the 52nd and 57th minutes. Peru’s brave run in the tournament with a young, injury-depleted side was all but ended when Juan Vargas was given a straight red card for an elbow to the face of defender Sebastián Coates in the 69th.
