Hosts and pre-tournament favorites Argentina were eliminated in a penalty shootout with Uruguay in the quarter-finals of Copa America 2011 on Saturday.

The two South American powers played to an entertaining 1-1 draw after 120 minutes with Diego Pérez scoring for Uruguay in the 5th and Gonzalo Higuaín equalizing for Argentina in the 17th. Both sides had several chances for a game winner throughout the match as each was reduced to 10 men because of red cards to Pérez in the 38th and Javier Mascherano in the 86th.

Impressive Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera blocked Carlos Tévez’s effort in the ensuing shootout to give Uruguay the 5-4 win on penalties and set up a semi-final meeting with Peru on July 19th.
