England claimed a suprise 2-1 win over FIFA number ranked number 1 USA on Saturday night at Brisbane Road in East London.
Playing attacking soccer from the start of the match, England went 2-0 up within 27 minutes on goals from Jess Clarke and Rachel Yankey. The United States made matters interesting with a Megan Rapinoe goal in the 39th but could not notch an equalizer as the hosts defended valiantly throughout the match.
The win was England’s first in its nine matches with the USA since 1988. The loss was Team USA’s second in its nine matches played thus far in 2011.
