Over frenetic 20,000 fans welcomed 2003 and 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho to new club Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.

The former FC Barcelona and AC Milan attacking midfielder ends a 10-year stint in Europe that saw him also represent Paris St. Germain after starting his career with Brazil’s Gremio. His contract with Flamengo is reportedly has a buyout clause of $235 million.

Ronaldinho promised to pay back Flamengo’s fans on the field following their enthusiastic greeting. He has also stated that hopes to represent Brazil when the country hosts the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Flamengo finished the 2010 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A season in a disappointing 14th position following their league title in 2009.
