A rapidly improving Mexico national women’s soccer team beat the United States for the first time in 26 meetings to qualify for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Friday night.
After being outscored 106-9 in their previous meetings with the USA, the hosts scored twice in the 3rd and 27th minutes with goals from Maribel Dominguez and Veronica Perez. Carli Lloyd tied the match for the USA with a 25th minute effort.
The USA must now beat Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying third place game on Monday for the right to play Italy in a home-and-home playoff series before each player can pack her suitcase for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
