Messi notched his 16th league goal of the season in the sixth minute with a curling left footer. In the 67th, the Argentine dribbled through the Getafe defence before passing to midfielder Xavi Hernandez for Barcelona’s second.

Roberto Soldado scored an injury-time penalty for Getafe after Mexican international Rafael Marquez was ejected for fouling Kepa Blanco.

The result leaves Barcelona five points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table with 55 points.
