AS Roma today revealed a special edition 2016\/17 Nike home kit for their December 4th Derby della Capitale clash with SS Lazio. The new kit honors AS Roma\u2019s unique bond with the Eternal City \u2014 its red body and metallic gold details evoking the tunics and bronze helmets historically worn by the Roman legions.<\/p>\n

Modelled by AS Roma legend Francesco Totti, the derby shirt has a striking dark red based complemented by metallic gold details. The look is intended to evokes the red tunics and bronze armour and helmets worn by the Roman legends when they fought to defend Rome from invaders. The jersey features a modern crew-neck collar and a gold AS Roma crest.<\/p>\n

As an ode to city pride, the collar has a maroon band with \u2018SPQR\u2019 knitted on the back. The acronym stands for \u201cSenatus Populusque Romanus,\u2019 which translates from Latin as \u201cThe Roman Senate and People\u201d (the government of ancient Rome). For more than 2,000 years these initials have been used to represent Rome, from the standards held aloft by the Roman legions to today on the city\u2019s red and gold coat of arms.

The sides of the AS Roma 16\/17 Nike kit feature a maroon stripe that runs the length of the shirt and shorts. Expanding when the player is in motion, the stripe maximizes ventilation and reveals an underlying gold layer. AS Roma\u2019s derby socks are red with \u2018SPQR\u2019 in gold on the shin.<\/p>\n
