Dutch football powerhouse AFC Ajax and adidas Football have launched a special commemorative kit celebrating the club’s 125th anniversary, drawing inspiration from the iconic white-red-white design first worn during the 1911\/1912 season. The heritage-inspired jersey features a classic buttoned collar and prominently displays the Amsterdam flag on the chest, complemented by all-white shorts and black socks with red detailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design pays homage to a historic team photograph taken on September 10, 1911, believed to be the earliest image capturing an Ajax squad wearing the now-famous white-red-white color scheme. This photograph commemorates the team’s victory in the “Gouden Kruis” (Golden Cross) tournament against Volharding. Prior to adopting this distinctive look, Ajax initially played in all-black kits followed by white-and-red striped uniforms before their promotion to the First Division necessitated a unique design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When seeking a distinctive identity, Ajax adopted the kit previously worn by Amsterdam’s V.V.V. (Veni Vidi Vici), whose football department had disbanded two seasons earlier. The 125th anniversary jersey authentically reproduces historical details, including the Amsterdam flag emblems that were originally reserved for players representing the Amsterdam national team. The traditional black socks, which Ajax wore until the 1961\/1962 season, have been faithfully recreated with period-appropriate cuff variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nod to historical authenticity, sponsors’ logos\u2014adidas, Ziggo, and ABN AMRO\u2014appear in red against the distinctive red stripe, enhancing the jersey’s vintage aesthetic rather than detracting from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajax’s men’s team will debut the anniversary kit on March 16, 2025, against AZ in Eredivisie action, while the women’s team will wear it on March 30 against ADO Den Haag. Additionally, Ajax Legends will showcase the commemorative uniform during the Beckenbauer Cup on March 17, a tournament organized for Bayern Munich’s own 125th anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
