In a significant nod to their storied history, Aston Villa Football Club has revealed a special commemorative kit to mark their 150th anniversary. The historic black kit will debut during Friday’s Emirates FA Cup third-round match against fellow Premier League side West Ham United, coinciding with the anniversary of the club’s first recorded match.
The design draws inspiration from Villa’s original team colors, predating their iconic claret and blue. This historical tribute carries particular significance as Aston Villa made football history in 1878 by becoming the first club in the United Kingdom to incorporate a crest on their playing kit, featuring the Scottish lion rampant motif.
The Aston Villa 150th Anniversary adidas jersey showcases a specially redrawn crest, meticulously recreated from the earliest available historical sources. This emblem, originally sourced from Scotland by William McGregor, represents a crucial piece of the club’s heritage and their pioneering role in football’s visual identity development.
While maintaining historical authenticity, the first Aston Villa shirt of 2025 incorporates modern performance elements through adidas’ Aeroready technology. The design features the manufacturer’s signature three stripes executed in an all-black finish, creating a subtle yet distinctive detail that bridges the club’s past and present.
For this commemorative occasion, both principal partners Betano and Trade Nation have relinquished their usual shirt sponsorship positions. This decision enables the club to present a more historically accurate representation of their original kit design, unmarred by modern commercial elements.
