Arsenal’s glory days could be on the way back: Their new kit provides a throwback to the successful Highbury era

Arsenal’s Premier League campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. They pushed Manchester City all of the way in the Premier League title race. For the first time since the Highbury Stadium days, the Gunners looked like they could become champions of England. Their home kit for next season will provide a further throwback to the glory days of the past, with gold detailing similar to the 2005/06 kit.

Mikel Arteta has made Arsenal challengers again

In the latter parts of Arsene Wenger’s tenure, Arsenal were well known for finishing in fourth place and never mounting serious title charges. Since he departed the club, they experienced a lengthy absence from UEFA Champions League football.

However, Mikel Arteta has returned the Gunners to the peak of European football. This time around UCL qualification will provide a consolation to their likely failed title pursuit, rather than being the ultimate end goal. In outright markets, for those betting on the English Premier League, Arsenal is offered at a price of 50/1 to miraculously win the Premier League title.

Evidently, Arsenal’s surprising challenge seems all but over. Meanwhile, the Premier League predictions this weekend suggest that Arsenal will end the season on a high with a victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal’s new kit could manifest the return of the glory days

Arsenal’s current home could be the base of a successful Arteta team over the next few years. Their home kit for next season contains gold detailing which was a unique feature of the iconic 2005/06 home kit. The dark red strip was donned by several Gunners legends including Thierry Henry. It represented the end of a successful period in the club’s history. The early parts of Wenger’s reign closed out the club’s time at Highbury with many trophies being added to the cabinet.

On the contrary, Arsenal’s new kit could manifest the return of a more successful period in the club’s history. Since leaving Highbury, Arsenal have only won domestic trophies over the tenures of many different coaches. The gold detailing returning to the home shirt could represent the belated resumption of the club’s golden era. Arsenal is one of the world’s biggest clubs and after a long wait, their performances on the pitch could finally indicate that on a consistent basis.

The imminent kit release will not represent the first time that the club’s kit designers have taken inspiration from the club’s history. The 2020/21 away kit featured a unique design that was based on the iconic marble walls in the East Stand of Highbury. The club fondly remember their past successes and the paths that have been taken which have ended in Arteta’s stunning side taking to the pitch in the present day.

The new kit release will at least allow fans to reminisce on the prime days of Wenger’s reign. Perhaps it could channel the current stars to reach another level next season. Maybe we could see incredible performances that could be likened to past stars such as Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. If all goes to plan Arsenal could be taking inspiration from their kits of the present in decades to come.
