Reigning Spanish La Liga champion Club Atlético de Madrid unveiled its 2021/22 Nike home kit earlier today. Los Colchoneros also provided a first look at their soon to be released 21/22 away, third and fourth (special edition) jerseys for the upcoming domestic, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League seasons.
According to Atlético de Madrid: This season we’re celebrating the 75th anniversary of our current name – Club Atlético de Madrid. On Jan. 1, 1947, Club Atlético-Aviación changed its name to Club Atlético de Madrid. Our crest also evolved, as the wings that represented the Spanish aviation disappeared. To celebrate the 75th anniversary, we want to pay tribute to such an important moment in our club’s history through the four kits we will wear the upcoming season. These are inspired by some unforgettable moments the Atlético fans have enjoyed during these 75 years.
The first kit is inspired by details from the first Red & White jersey worn by our players under the name Club Atlético de Madrid in 1947. That historic shirt featured a central white stripe that makes a return in this new design. The front of the shirt also features a huge letter A created by the central red stripes, which is another tribute to Atlético de Madrid.
The second kit commemorates a legendary moment in Atlético’s last 75 years: The Double. Inspired by the second jersey worn by the heroes that won LaLiga and Copa del Rey in the 95-96 season, the dark blue and red colors combine to remind fans of the year in which Kiko, Pantic, Caminero, Simeone, Vizcaíno, Solozábal and other Red & White legends made history.
Many of our achievements from the last 75 years happened in one place – the Vicente Calderón. That’s why our third kit pays tribute to our former stadium. It features the red, white and blue colors of the seats of what was our home for 50 years. The jersey also includes an image of the stadium on the inside of the collar.
To round off the anniversary tributes, we will launch a red kit inspired by two historic moments: the first leg of the European Cup semi-final – which was played on April 10, 1974 against Celtic in Glasgow – and the 1985 Copa del Rey final that we won against Athletic Club. This jersey will feature the crest that coincided with the change of name from Atlético Aviación to Atlético de Madrid on Jan. 1, 1947, along with the slogan ’75 years honoring your name’ in the middle of the shirt.
