Forty years ago, Malmö FF played the final of the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League). In tribute to accomplishment, the Swedish club will don a 2019 home kit inspired by the one they wore in 1979.
The club has also launched a midnight blue away and a deep red third kit from their official outfitter PUMA.
In Malmo’s customary sky blue with white details, the new home shirt is adorned with a white polo collar and sleeve stripes to emulate the look of the jersey that was worn against Nottingham Forest in Munich on May 30, 1979.
“It will be an honor to play in a match jersey that celebrates our successful history. It is stylish and radiates a winning mentality. In addition, it sits nicely and has a good fit. It feels like a shirt that you win gold in”, says MFF’s team captain Markus Rosenberg.
The midnight blue color used for the Malmö FF 2019 PUMA away kit was introduced during the club’s group stage appearance in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League 2014 and was the result of a vote among MFF supporters. The design is inspired by the evening sky and the stars of Malmö.
Deep red was the color that club and Sweden legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic wore when he scored an unforgettable goal against Djurgårdens IF at Stockholms Stadion in 2001. It was also last Malmö FF’s last red jersey before the reintroduction of the color this season via the team’s new third kit.
“It is amazingly exciting that this year we are launching three new shirts. It’s extra fun is that this year’s home jersey is a tribute to 1979 and part of the European Cup Final 40th Anniversary. We have developed the shirts in close cooperation with Malmö FF and the players. 1979, uniqueness and fit have been key to the effort,” says Rutger Hagstad, marketing manager PUMA Nordic.
White player name and number print will be used on the new home kit. Sky blue will feature on the away and third jerseys for contrast.
Malmö FF will debut their 2019 home kit when they meet BK Häcken on April 1st in the opening round of the new Allsvenskan season.
