Well-received by The Hammers faithful, the new West Ham alternate shirt is the first to display the club’s updated crest. It takes its design inspiration from the white away jerseys worn by WHUFC when they won the 1980 FA Cup Final and placed third in the First Division (predecessor to the Premier League) in 1986.
Trimmed in the famous claret and blue of West Ham United, the 16/17 away shirt celebrates the club’s new home of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park via embroidery bearing its name and “2016 – 2017” under its badge. The ground’s co-ordinates (51.5386° N, 0.0165° W) are printed on the inside neckline beneath half of a stylized Union Jack.
The UK flag is also present on the outside sleeves on the kit. This is a nod to to West Ham’s origins as Thames Ironworks (who included the Union Flag in their crest) and a symbol of West Ham’s pride to be playing in the stadium that hosted the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Sky blue short and white socks accented in claret and blue complete the West Ham United 2016/17 Umbro away uniform.
