Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, usually known as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco, is a popular Brazilian multisports club from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil that was founded on August 21, 1898. Vasco is best known for its soccer team which now campaigns in the Brazilian Série A after being promoted from Série B at the end of the 2009/10 season. The four-time Série A champions and 1998 Copa Libertadores winners finished last season’s campaign in 11th place.
On Tuesday, the Vasco da Gama Penalty 2011 third jersey was unveiled. The shirt celebrates the club’s history of inclusion that began in 1924 when then Vasco president José Augusto Prestes removed the team from the Metropolitan Athletic Sports Association (AMEA) when the league called for expulsion of Vasco’s 12 non-white players on the basis of race.
The Vasco da Gama Penalty 2011 home, away and third kits will be offcially launched on March 24th at the Sede Náutica da Lagoa in Rio de Janeiro.
Guests and media will have the opportunity to participate in a special debate on “Racism in football ” in honor of Vasco’s ongoing battle against the social and racial segregation.
