Back on August 1st, 2010, the legendary Pelé announced that The New York Cosmos are back in business.
The return of the what was once the biggest soccer club in the US involves a launch of Cosmos Academy in NYC and LA and the club becoming the organizer of Copa NYC, a World Cup-style grassroots tournament that engages local communities to represent their countries of origin. The club may also seek to enter Major League Soccer in the near future.
As part of the relaunch of the New York Cosmos the club’s Umbro 2011 home jersey was unveiled. A few weeks ago, the Cosmos’ 2011 Goalkeeper kit was launched. Now a slightly reimagined version of the New York Cosmos 1976/77 Pelé home jersey has been released by Umbro.
The retro-look kit is of significance in American soccer history as it is based on that worn by Pelé during the final year of his storied playing career. The 1976/1977 New York Cosmos also featured former Italian international Giorgio Chinaglia, German legend Franz Beckenbauer and 1970 World Cup winning captain (with Brazil) Carlos Alberto.
The New York Cosmos Umbro 2011 range (including the NY Cosmos Umbro 1976/77 home jersey) is now available at the World Soccer Shop NY Cosmos store.
