FC Barcelona advanced to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night by defeating Arsenal FC 3-1 at the Nou Camp.
Trailing the aggregate series by a score of 2-1 from the opening leg in London, Pep Guardiola’s team outshot Arsenal by 17-0 but were held scoreless until three minutes into first half stoppage time when Lionel Messi scored his first for the hosts. Messi added another from the penalty spot in the 71 after Xavi had made the score 2-1 in the 69th.
Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets’ own goal had equalized the match in the 53rd to put Arsenal 3-2 up on aggregate. Shortly afterwards Gunners striker Rob van Persie was sent off for a second yellow card.
