FC Barcelona downed Athletic Bilbao 3-1 to move into second place in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday. The defending champions now have 12 points after five games and lie one point behind leaders behind Valencia.
Barcelona’s David Villa combined with Seydou Keita for Barca’s first goal in the 54th minute. Xavi Hernandez doubled the lead in the 74th before Igor Gabilondo pulled one back for Bilbao in the 90th on a close range tap in. Sergio Busquets settled matters in the 92nd with a well-taken effort that made the score 3-1 in favor of the guests.
Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Amorebieta was red-carded for late sliding tackle on Andres Iniesta in the 34th minute while Barcelona’s David Villa was ejected in the closing minutes of the match for pushing Carlos Gurpegi in the face.
