Football Club de Nantes is one of the most successful clubs in French football with eight Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France wins, and one Coupe de la Ligue victory to its credit. FC Nantes has also produced a series of well-known players via its youth system including World Cup 1998 winners Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps and Christian Karembeu of France.

Nantes has been campaigning in the second tier of French soccer, Ligue 2, since its relegation from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2007/08 season. The club finished the 2009/10 season in 15th position.
