The last time Newcastle played in an all-blue kit was during the 2005/06 season, with the strip being used in the early part of United’s Intertoto Cup campaign. But over the years, the colour has featured prominently, with blue used in the late 1960s and early 1970s for both the change and third kit.
Blue was also the colour as United made their bow in the Premier League during the 1993/94 season, and even got an airing at St. James’ Park when visitors Sheffield Wednesday turned up with two away kits – one of which clashed with our famous black and white stripes and another which clashed with the referee’s uniform.
It’s now ten years since Newcastle wore all-white, with the away kit used in Sir Bobby Robson’s first season in charge at United.
But the link goes back much further, with the Magpies famously donning a white strip against Sporting Lisbon at St. James’ Park in 1968 on their way to Fairs Cup glory.
