It was formed in 1948 as a merger of the clubs Kölner Ballspiel-Club 1901 and SpVgg Sülz 07. The club’s main rivals are Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Fortuna Düsseldorf — all clubs from the same general region, near the river Rhine.

The club recently finished the 2008/09 German Bundesliga season in 12th place. Famous 1. FC Köln Lukas Podolski returns to the club after a stint with Bayen Munich for the 2009/10 season. Perhaps a better league finish is in store for them with his help.

Here’s a look at the newly unveiled 1. FC Köln Reebok home kit (or Trikot in German) for the 09/10 season. It was worn for the first time during yesterday’s 1-1 tie with VfL Bochum.
