Video: Club vs. Dancing with the Stars

We’ve heard of club verses country rows. Now we’ve got our first club vs. Dancing with the Stars-induced row. Surprisingly, this comes from the Land of Cricket – India.

India national football team Baichung Bhutia served a quit notice to his club team Mohun Bagan on Monday after the club officials questioned his commitment to the team. Bhutia is now seeking an immediate release from his two-year contract with the club.

The cause of all of this? Apparently, Mohun Bagan slapped a showcause notice on Baichung last Thursday and accused him of remaining not “fully committed” to their I-League cause because he had repeatedly skipped practice sessions to shoot for a dance program called Jhalak Dikhla Ja. The show is the Indian Dancing with the Stars franchise.

National football coach Bob Houghton is backing Bhutia in his stand-off with Mohun Bagan and has described the club’s questioning of India captain’s commitment as “inane”. Thus, the plot thickens.
