Real Madrid went six points clear of second place FC Barcelona with a 4-1 win over city rivals Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday.
Adrian Lopez gave Atletico a suprise 15th-minute lead before goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was red-carded for a foul on Madrid striker Karim Benzema in the penalty box. Cristiano Ronaldo converted the subsequent penalty in the 24th to level the match.
Angel Di Maria put Madrid ahead 2-1 the 49th and substitute Gonzalo Higuain scored in the 65th to all but seal the win for Jose Mourinho’s team.
Ronaldo scored his second penalty of the match in the 82nd following the dismissal of Diego Godin for a foul on Higuain in the box.
