Higuain opened the scoring with a one-touch shot from Marcelo’s well-placed pass in the 29th minute. His second came in the 42nd on an Ezequiel Garay assist.
Higuain turned provider to set up Kaka’s lone goal via a through pass in the 48th while Cristiano Ronaldo scored Madrid’s fourth from the penalty spot in the 79th. Longtime Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez got the title challengers’ fifth well into added time.
Real Madrid now has 59 points and remains two points behind leaders FC Barcelona after twenty-four games played by both sides.
